That is not dead which can eternal lie,
and with strange aeons even death may die.

It may sound like paranoid Yoda-speak, but it's actually H.P. Lovecraft describing our next guest.

Number 2
Cthulhu

Origin
Extraterrestrial. Actually, extradimensional. He came from another world.

Description

In short, he is really big, has dragon wings on his back and tentacles on his face. But it's not that simple.

Cthulhu or Thulhu or Katooloo or whatever other unspeakable word you can create, defies description. He is what our predecessors saw in the dark part of the forest and in the deep water under their boats. We don't fear him for what he can do to us, but for what he can do to our world, once he rises from his slumber. So try not to wake him up, will you?

He lost an argument long time ago and currently sleeps in a giant stone coffin somewhere on the bottom of Pacific ocean. This short story by Neil Gaiman will shed some light on his biography. He is also the only monster in our chart with his own ancient cult and worshippers.

Finally, he's probably winner of several other contests:
- "Character from a story everybody talks about but nobody has ever read"
- "Character with most messed up name"
- "Character with most conflicting descriptions"

Area of expertise
He loves to tear worlds apart. He enjoys causing pain and fear. He's amused watching civilizations fall apart.

Current status
ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn.
In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming. Next time don't embarrass yourself and bring your own dictionary.

Notes
Cthulhu is one of the numerous Great Old Ones. Every One of them deserves a mention. But they won't get it because there's only one spot left and it's reserved already.
